LMS Working Groups Overview
Qualifications: General attributes: Ability to work in a group environment. Fast learner. Ability to work to deadline. Ability to hit the ground running. Ability to apply concrete experience to abstract, generalized situations. Flexibility. Sense of humor. Ability to represent constituencies: institution (research center, community college, etc.) or specialty (authority control; cataloging; indexing; etc.) Willingness to create "satellite" groups to work on focused topics. The SUNYConnect project is looking for volunteers to form a Data Management Working group to address such issues as:

Authority Control
Union Catalog
Content
Government Documents
Metadata for E-Resources
Record consolidation
Indexing
Indexing (minimum Standards)
Workflow recommendations
Resource files
Remote Storage

The specific timetable to deal with the above concerns is as follows:

Formation of the group: by Jan. 31, 2001.

Priority one:
Authority control

Assumption: authority control in the union catalog will serve two purposes: 1) enrich the union catalog by linking with bibliographic records supplied by SUNY institutions 2) provide unlinked LC authority records for use by all SUNY institutions

Work with pilot sites and Access Management Work Group to assure consistent and non-redundant set of codes

Indexing of union catalog

Bearing in mind the need to develop minimum standards for all SUNYConnect participants, develop indexing specifications for the union catalog

Record consolidation in union catalog

By Sept. 2001
Develop specifications for single instance of bibliographic record as recommended by ALEPH Configuration Team

Workflow

By Sept. 2001
Make recommendations for workflow between union catalog and local catalog Contributing local authority records to the union catalog Using records from union catalog or other SUNYConnect institutions Contributing local bibliographic records to the union catalog

Minimum standards for indexing

Develop minimum standards for index points in all SUNYConnect catalogs

Discussion of Centralized cataloging

In the context of having developed record consolidation and workflows in priority one, begin discussion of concept of master bibliographic record created at central level and sent to local level

Content of Union Catalog

Should SUNYConnect purchase GPO records to use as resource for all SUNY

Should SUNYConnect provide metadata for electronic resources as a resource for all SUNY

Ability to represent constituencies: institution (research center, community college, etc.) or specialty (authority control; cataloging; indexing; etc.) Willingness to create "satellite" groups to work on focused topics.

Specific attributes: Required: Experience migrating from one system to another or installing first LMS. Experience with indexing parameters. Knowledge of the MARC bibliographic and authorities formats. Experience using an automated authority control system.

Desired: Knowledge of record-merging techniques. General knowledge of non-MARC/AACR2 metadata structures.
