(Editor's note: The SUNYConnect Advisory Council announced the final recommendation at press time.) An excellent group from across SUNY has been evaluating electronic resources that fulfill core information needs for SUNYConnect institutions. Representing all of the campus sectors of SUNY as well as the faculty, the group also brings a diverse array of experience to the evaluation. The team, selected by the SUNYConnect Advisory Council (S.A.C.), includes librarians busy on the frontlines with students and faculty using various databases as well as librarians experienced in negotiating with vendors, evaluating competing resources and fulfilling collection development goals. In addition, each SUNYConnect library has designated a campus contact. These contacts have been involved in providing input for the team as to which of the electronic resources is the best fit for SUNY and SUNYConnect. Based on the committee's charge, the group selected a number of vendors (on state contract) that have electronic resources corresponding to those stated needs. Formal presentations were made to the group on March 7, 2006 by representatives of EBSCO, ProQuest, Thomson Gale and Wilson. Trial access to these (and some other) resources has been established. The team, the campus contacts, and others have been utilizing this trial access to evaluate the electronic resources. As of this writing, the SUNYConnect Electronic Resources Evaluation Project Team's recommendation has just been presented to S.A.C. That advisory council will review the team's proposal and make a final recommendation to the provost. Stay tuned. |
