The evaluation process recently undertaken to review the SUNYConnect electronic resources revealed a remarkably high level of consensus regarding SUNYConnect-wide offerings. Yet part of that was driven by the tendency of database vendors to offer attractive packages of resources which tend to make the selection of a single resource financially untenable. Such was the situation related to the Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center from Thomson Gale. The community college sector, in particular, expressed a strong interest in retaining this resource. However, competing information needs across a huge university system did not leave enough funds to subscribe to Opposing Viewpoints as a standalone resource. Since this decision, over 40 SUNYConnect institutions have expressed an interest in subscribing to the resource on their own. This level of interest and financial commitment made it possible to continue providing Opposing Viewpoints to all SUNYConnect participants. Thanks to Adirondack, Brockport, Broome, Buffalo, Buffalo State, Cayuga, Cobleskill, Columbia-Greene, Corning, Cortland, Dutchess, Empire, Erie, Fashion Institute, Finger Lakes, Fredonia, Fulton-Montgomery, Genesee, Geneseo, Herkimer, Hudson Valley Jamestown, Jefferson, Mohawk Valley, Monroe, Morrisville, Nassau, New Paltz, Niagara, North Country, Oneonta, Onondaga, Orange, Plattsburgh, Potsdam, Schenectady, Stony Brook, Suffolk, Sullivan, SUNYIT and Westchester for making this database available to all of SUNYConnect. The SUNYConnect financial plan is under review. Among other things, this review will attempt to incorporate the OVRC costs into the complete SUNYConnect financial framework. But, in the meantime, just as certain campuses pay more to provide access to New England Journal of Medicine and ScienceDirect titles for all of SUNYConnect, this is an example of SUNYergy at its best. |
