SUNYConnect's Electronic Resources Coordinator and his report to the SUNY Council of Library Directors Spring (April 20) 2009 meeting included the following:

"New databases via NYS Library NOVEL program

  • The New York State Library has announced changes to the list of NOVEL databases (as of April 1, 2009)...
  • ProQuest is now the major vendor of NOVEL databases (one year agreement).

ProQuest Proposal

  • ProQuest has submitted an unsolicited bid for a suite of databases as a replacement to the SUNYConnect resources from EBSCO;
  • This proposal has been shared with the SUNYConnect Electronic Resources Team.

EBSCO Counter Proposallink to EBSCO Search

  • EBSCO has submitted a counter proposal in response to information from OLIS about the ProQuest offer;
  • This proposal has been shared with the SUNYConnect Electronic Resources Team."

As a result of these interactions, SUNY and the Electronic Resources Team took EBSCO up on their offer of the following expanded suite of resources --

+ Academic Search™ Complete (NEW – upgrade from Academic Search™ Premier)
Covering most areas ofacademic study, this scholarly, multi-disciplinary database contains more than 6,100 full-text periodicals —EBSCOHost Academic Search Complete as well as indexing and abstracts for more than 10,100 journals — and offers access to monographs, reports, conference proceedings andmuch more.

+ Academic Search™ Alumni Edition (NEW)Designed to meet the research needs of the post-college professional, this multidisciplinary database provides full-text for more than 3,190 journals, as well as indexing and abstracting for more than 8,000 journals.

+ Alt HealthWatch™ (NEW)
This database focuses on the many perspectives of complementary, holistic and integrated approaches to health care and wellness. In addition to providing full-text articles for more than 180 international journals and reports, this database provides access to hundreds of pamphlets, booklets, original research and book excerpts.

+ Associates Programs Source™ (NEW)
Containing nearly 1,000 full-text journals as well as 11 full-text books, this resource provides comprehensive coverage of the most-relevant associate program level content.

+ Business Source® Complete (NEW – upgrade from Business Source® Premier)
This database provides the leading collection of bibliographic and full-text content covering all disciplines of business, including marketing, management, MIS, POM, accounting, finance and economics. PDF backfiles for the most important scholarly business journals, trade publications and top management journals date back as far as 1886. In addition, this resource provides full-text non-journal content, including financial data, books, monographs, major reference works, case studies, industry & market research reports, company profiles, SWOT analyses and more.

+ Business Source® Alumni Edition (NEW)
This resource is designed for the research needs of the post-college professional, providing access to 1,540 full-text business magazines and journals. This database includes publications in nearly every area of business, including marketing, management, MIS, POM, accounting, finance, econometrics, economics and more.

+ Canadian Reference Centre™ (NEW)
This database combines Canadian magazines, newspapers, newswires and reference books to create the largest collection of regional full-text content available to Canadian libraries. This database includes leading Canadian periodicals and international (U.S. and U.K.) periodicals in full text; full-text reference books; 84,774 full-text biographies; and an Image Collection of 440,207 photos, maps and flags.

o CINAHL® Plus with Full Text
This is the world’s most comprehensive nursing & allied health research database, providing full text for more than 750 journals indexed in CINAHL, as well as full text for more than 220 books/monographs.

+ Computer Source™ (NEW)
Featuring nearly 300 full-text journals and magazines covering topics such as computer science, programming, artificial intelligence, cybernetics, information systems, robotics and software, Computer Source provides a balance of full-text technical journals and full-text consumer computer titles.

+ Computers & Applied Sciences Complete™ (NEW)
Covering the research and development spectrum of the computing and applied sciences disciplines, this database EBSCOHost Computer and Applied Sciencescontains collected knowledge on traditional engineering challenges & research, and is a resource for research concerning the business and social implications of new technology. CASC provides indexing and abstracts for more than 1,800 academic journals, professional publications and other reference sources from a diverse collection. Full text is also available for more than 730 periodicals.

o Education Research Complete™
This massive file offers the world’s largest and most complete collection of full-text education journals, covering scholarly research and information relating to all areas of education. Topics covered include all levels of education from early childhood to higher education, and all educational specialties, such as multilingual education, health education and testing.

o ERIC®
ERIC, the Education Resource Information Center, provides access to education literature and resources. The database provides information from journals included in the Current Index of Journals in Education and Resources in Education Index, and contains more than 1,282,000 records and links to more than 314,000 full-text documents from ERIC.

+ Environment Complete™ (NEW)EBSCOHost - Evironment Complete
Containing more than 1,957,000 records, as well as full text for more than 680 journals, this resource offers deep coverage in applicable areas of agriculture, ecosystem ecology, energy, renewable energy sources, natural resources, marine & freshwater science, geography, pollution & waste management, environmental technology, environmental law, public policy, social impacts, urban planning and more.

o GreenFILE
GreenFILE focuses on the relationship between human beings and the environment. Comprised of more than 600 scholarly and general interest titles, as well as government documents and reports, GreenFILE offers a unique perspective on the positive and negative ways humans affect the ecology. The total number of records is approximately 295,000, and full text is provided for more than 4,600 records from open access titles. Also included in GreenFILE is a 6,800-term Thesaurus.

+ Health Source®: Consumer Edition (NEW)
This comprehensive database is a rich collection of consumer health information, providing access to nearly 80 full-text consumer health magazines and many other related resources. Topics covered include cancer, diabetes, drugs & alcohol, aging, fitness, nutrition & dietetics, children’s health and more. Information provided in this database should not be viewed as a means for self-diagnosis or a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.

+ Health Source®: Nursing/Academic Edition (NEW)
This resource provides nearly 550 scholarly full-text journals focusing on many medical disciplines, and offers access to 822 abstracted and indexed journals. Coverage of nursing and allied health is particularly strong.

+ Humanities International Complete™ (NEW)
Providing full text for more than 890 journals, this database provides comprehensive coverage of the humanities, with worldwide content pertaining to literary, scholarly and creative thought.EBSCOHost Library and Info Science Abstracts

+ Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts
with Full Text (NEW – upgrade from the LISTA index) This database contains full text for more than 240 journals and a dozen full-text monographs. Subject coverage includes librarianship, classification, cataloging, bibliometrics, online information retrieval, information management and more. Coverage in the database extends back as far as the mid-1960s.

o MasterFILE™ Premier
This resource contains full text for nearly 1,750 periodicals covering general reference, business, health, education, general science, multicultural issues and much more. This database also contains full text for nearly 500 reference books; 86,017 biographies; 105,786 primary source documents; and an Image Collection of 400,972 photos, maps & flags.

+ MEDLINE® with Full Text (NEW – upgrade from the MEDLINE index)
This is the world’s most comprehensive source of full text for medical journals, providing full text for more than 1,470 journals indexed in MEDLINE. With full-text coverage dating back to 1965, this wide-ranging file contains full text for many of the most-used journals in the MEDLINE index – with no embargo.

o Military & Government Collection™
Designed to offer current news pertaining to all branches of the military and government, this database offers a thorough collection of periodicals, academic journals and other content pertinent to the increasing needs of these sites. This database provides full text for nearly 300 journals and periodicals and also offers indexing and abstracts for nearly 400 journals.

+ Newspaper Source™ Plus (NEW)
This resource includes 1,570 full-text newspapers, providing more than 27 million full-text articles. Newspaper Source Plus contains comprehensive full text for major national (U.S.) and international newspapers, and features more than 583,100 television and radio news transcripts, videos and podcasts.

+ Points of View Reference Center™ (NEW)
This full-text database is designed to provide students with a series of essays that present multiple sides of a EBSCOHost Point of View Reference Centercurrent issue. The database contains 255 topics, each with an overview (objective background/description), point(argument), counterpoint (opposing argument) and Critical Thinking Guide. Points of View Reference Center contains a balance of materials from all viewpoints, including 1,143 main essays, leading political magazines from both sides of the aisle, newspapers, radio & TV news transcripts, primary source documents and reference books.

o Professional Development Collection™
This is the most comprehensive and most valuable collection of full-text education journals, including full text for nearly 520 high quality education journals, as well as more than 200 educational reports.

+ Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection™ (NEW)
This valuable resource contains 570 full-text journals and 48 books & monographs, offering users access to many of the most prominent and well-respected journals in the field. The database also includes full-text content from relevant magazines and health reports. Coverage is particularly strong in child & adolescent psychology and various areas of counseling.

+ Religion & Philosophy Collection™ (NEW)EBSCOHost Religion and Philosophy
Containing nearly 300 full-text journals, this database covers topics such as world religions, major denominations,biblical studies, religious history, epistemology, political philosophy, philosophy of language, moral philosophy and the history of philosophy.

+ Vocational & Career Collection™ (NEW)
This comprehensive resource provides full-text coverage for nearly 350 trade and industry-related periodicals, covering topics such as computer & data processing, electrical technology, nursing, interior design, law enforcement & criminal justice, marketing & advertising, hospitality & tourism, construction and more.

Additional full-text newspapers, computer science resources, humanities databases, materials specific to the community college student, vetted information resources for our alumni, these are some of the positive enhancements from this agreement.

An analysis done by University at Albany indicates that the enhancement involves access to nearly 5000 new, unique sources (journals, newspapers, periodicals, etc). According to the vendor, SUNYConnect's recently expanded set of resources includes more than 11,000 active, full-text journals and magazines.

With the offer for the largest ever expansion of SUNYConnect resources at terms favorable to SUNY, an agreement for a three year renewal was reached. SUNY thanks EBSCO Publishing for being an excellent working EBSCO Publishingpartner.
