April 5, 2001 Elsevier ScienceDirect is added to SUNYConnect electronic resources. ScienceDirect provides unlimited access to over 700 full-text Elsevier Science journals at the SUNY campuses

October 13, 1999 SUNY sends bid award letter to Ex Libris. This award letter and announcement officially ends the SLAM process.

October 12, 1999 Memorandum of Understanding is signed by OLIS and Ulster CCC to proceed with development of the web-based information literacy course. The completed course is to be submitted for acceptance testing in April 2000 and then released to the campuses.

August 2, 1999 The SLAM committee presents its recommendation for the SUNYConnect Library Management System to Provost Salins. Provost Salins accepts the recommendation and asks for additional time to have it reviewed by others within SUNY System Administration.

August 5, 1999 The selection of the information literacy course proposal from Ulster County Community College is announced.

July 2, 1999 Proposals are received from SUNY campuses in response to the information literacy course RFP. A committee of SUNY librarians, teaching faculty and OLIS and SLN representatives begins evaluating the proposals.

July 1, 1999 OLIS renews subscriptions for OCLC FirstSearch base package, Britannica Online, and IAC Expanded Academic ASAP.

June 29, 1999 SAC reviews a drastically reduced SUNYConnect financial plan that relies heavily on campus fees. The plan is approved in concept.

May 27, 1999 The SLAM Evaluation Committee concludes scripted demonstrations with the three final LMS vendors (Sirsi, Endeavor, Ex Libris). SUNYNet staff conduct network tests of all vendors to better understand how the applications behave on the network.

April 30, 1999 Provost Salins attends the SUNY Council of Library Directors Annual Meeting. The Directors pass a resolution agreeing to contribute $1.00 FTE in FY 99/00 towards expansion of SUNYConnect electronic resources.

April 28 1999 A SUNYConnect logo is selected and announced in SUNYergy, Vol 1, No. 2.

The RFP for a web-based information literacy program is released for responses only from the SUNY community.

April 14, 1999 Provost Salins renames the Library Automation Steering Group to the SUNYConnect Advisory Council.

April 9, 1999 Representatives from the OLIS, Virtual Library Action Group, and LASG meet to finalize recommendations for initial cost sharing and governance.

March 30, 1999 LMS bid responses are due. Evaluation of bid responses begins.

March 15, 1999 Representatives from OLIS, ALIS and the Council of Library Directors meet with Legislative Leaders to discuss SUNYConnect.

January 29, 1999 The OLIS distributes a new Web-based publication called SUNYergy, SUNY Libraries Working Together to keep the library community informed about the progress of SUNYConnect.

January 19, 1999 The RFP for a library management system is released. An evaluation team of librarians from University Centers and Health Science Centers, Four-Year and Community Colleges, and Colleges of Technology is drawn from the SLAM group to work with a consultant in reviewing vendor responses.

December 1998 A SUNYConnect prototype is created which provides a web interface to 47 SUNY Library catalogs and a commercial full text service.Associate Provost Christine Haile approves a change in purpose for the Library Automation Steering Group, positioning the group to provide governance for the SUNYConnect project. LASG is composed of representatives from the SUNY Council of Library Directors, the SUNY Librarians Association, the Computer Officers Association, the Telecommunications Officers Association, the SUNY Business Officers Association, Academic Vice Presidents, with ex-officio representation from the OLIS and SUNYNet.

SUNYConnect is part of the SUNY Multi-year Investment Plan.

Members of the SUNYLA Library Instruction Committee and OLIS representatives begin developing an RFP for a web-based information literacy course to become part of SUNYConnect.

November 20, 1998 SLiCAT (SUNY Library Contract Advisory Team) commences a bimonthly meeting schedule by videoconference. It continues to evaluate electronic resources for possible inclusion in SUNYConnect.

November 1998 A SUNYConnect expense budget is finalized by the Virtual Library Action Group and presented to Provost Salins.

August 1998 Larry Randall is hired on a release time basis from SUNY Purchase to work with the OLIS as SUNYConnect Project Coordinator. Maureen Zajkowski from SUNY Binghamton is hired on a release time basis to work as the SLAM Project Manager.

July 1998 The virtual library project is given the name SUNYConnect.

July 1, 1998 The OLIS purchases a one-year subscription to an electronic encyclopedia, nine online abstracts and indexes, and a database with 750 full text journals for all SUNY Libraries. Total cost to the University is $527,000. This package would have cost over $900,000 if each campus had purchased the same resources individually.

June 1998 A presentation is made to the SUNY Academic Vice Presidents about the new library initiative. Dr. Elaine H. Hairston, former Chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents attends to talk about her involvement with the OhioLink program.

April 24, 1998 Library Directors unanimously pass a resolution stating that SUNY should begin implementation of a common library management system as soon as possible and that SUNY should increase access to electronic information resources for all libraries within the system. A team of Library Directors forms the Virtual Library Action Group to work with OLIS to keep the process moving.

March 1998 The OLIS releases a web interface to the catalogs of the forty LAIP participants. Future plans are made for utilizing the same interface to access other SUNY Library catalogs.

January 21, 1998 The initial report from SLAM assessing the LAIP is released. The report indicates that the benefits of LAIP included: shared systems, centralized support and implementation assistance, and good communication. The deficiencies relate to instability at System Administration, budget shortages, and vendor service support.

November 25, 1997 Representatives from the SUNY Council of Library Directors and the Library Automation Steering Group meet with Provost Peter D. Salins to discuss the development of the SUNY Virtual Library.

June 1997 The SUNY Library Automation Migration (SLAM) group is formed with representatives from the SUNY library community. The group is charged with assessing the Library Automation Implementation Program (LAIP), and selecting a library management system based on information gleaned in the assessment phase.

April 1997 The SUNY Council of Library Directors resolves to develop a plan for a SUNY Virtual Library. Joe Branin, SUNY Stony Brook is asked to produce the plan.
